This roadway is part of an abandoned town called Centralia in Pennsylvania as a result of a coal mine fire in which has been burning underground since 1962.

I am unsure of when this place came under my radar, but I’m glad it did. This place, while a dead zone, certainly is beautiful in its own way.

  1. It is very surprising to me that a former state highway has an owner. This land was under the possession of the state, and since people did not abandon it I don’t think Pagnotti can claim it right away. Pagnotti buried it to prevent people from visiting, and after some time Pagnotti wants to claim it. In Pennsylvania the law says 21 years of continuous use can give people the right to claim land, and here people used this road openly for almost 30 years, so by that rule it belongs to the people, not Pagnotti who covered it with dirt. I think it is still not too late to get our highway back from the coal company. we need to start a petition.
